How to Avoid Microplastics Without Throwing Out Everything You Own

You have probably heard the one about eating a credit card’s worth of plastic every week. Oh, you haven’t? Well, ok, it’s mostly a myth anyway. This concept comes from a 2019 study that was later identified as a significant overestimate.

Don’t worry, The real number is lower, but nobody knows exactly how much lower, which is one of those things that is simultaneously reassuring and not reassuring at all, right?

What we do know is that microplastics are in our bodies. They have been found in blood, lungs, liver, kidneys, and even breast milk. Researchers at the University of New Mexico found concentrations in brain tissue up to 20 times higher than in other organs in a 2025 study. The science on what this means for long-term health is still being written as we speak (or read) – but the presence itself is not in dispute.

Since you’ve asked, I started my microplastic journey (some might call it an obsession) with a podcast I’ve heard. I was listening to an episode of Diary of a CEO about toxins, and by the end of it I wandered into a topic I somehow hadn’t looked at closely before.

The health angle is what pulled me in, if I’m honest. The environmental side had always mattered to me, but this time it felt different, more personal, and for me even a bit scary.

With this article my goal is not to alarm you. It is also not to suggest you throw everything out and start fresh (like I was willing to do if money wasn’t an issue) –  cause nobody does that sustainably.

What follows is a practical look at where your exposure to microplastics is the highest, what the research suggests about reducing it, and which changes are most worth your attention in order to avoid microplastics in your daily life.

I’m having this realization as well, that we cannot eliminate microplastic exposure completely, but we can reduce microplastics at home in ways that genuinely add up.

If I’m allowed to give you some tips that sums this whole article up, it is that the highest-impact changes are switching from plastic to glass or stainless steel water bottles, never heating food in plastic, filtering your tap water, and choosing personal care products in non-plastic packaging.

What Are Microplastics and Where Do They Come From?

Microplastics are these tiny plastic particles smaller than 5 millimeters – roughly the size of a pencil eraser at the large end and invisible to the naked eye at the small end. Nanoplastics, the even smaller subcategory, are particles fine enough to cross cell membranes and enter the bloodstream.

They enter the environment through two main pathways. The first is the breakdown plastic from larger plastic items like water bottles, bags, tires, your Doritos snack bags, other packaging materials and more. They basically degrade over time, releasing particles into  our soil, water, and the air we breath.

The second is intentional. Those are some microplastics that are manufactured directly into products, including certain cosmetics, toothpastes, cleaning agents, and agricultural applications.

Once in the environment, they cycle through the food chain. Plants absorb them from contaminated soil and irrigation water and fish and shellfish ingest them directly from water.

They even turn up in the most basic food items we use like sea salt, in bottled water, in tap water, and in the air inside your home.

A 2022 review from UC San Francisco’s Program on Reproductive Health and the Environment, commissioned by California legislators and covering nearly 2,000 scientific studies, found ingested microplastics appear to reduce fertility in animal models and may increase cancer risk – particularly in the digestive tract.

The question is not whether you are exposed – you are, I mean  we all are. The more useful question is: which sources can you actually control, and where is the effort worth it? 

 

How to Reduce Microplastic Exposure Through What You Drink

Water is one of the most significant and most controllable entry points for microplastics. Both tap and bottled water contain microplastics. That’s a disappointment right? You might have thought that your good since you don’t consume bottled water (well, at least I did).

Microplastic in Bottle Water

A 2018 study published in Frontiers in Chemistry tested 259 bottles from 11 brands across 9 countries and found plastic in 93% of the samples.

While plastic bottles do not just contain microplastics – they contribute them, particularly as the plastic ages or gets exposed to heat, glass and stainless steel on the other hand, are both stable, non-leaching alternatives.

It has a bamboo lid, no plastic lining inside the bottle itself, and it still looks like new cause I watch over it so intensely. Ho yeah, and most importantly, it doesn’t lick!

What about microplastic in tap water

Ok, as we covered that plastic water bottles are out of the equation, let’s see what can be done regarding your tap water issue.

The good news are that even thought tap water is not clean in this regard either, research consistently shows it contains fewer particles per liter than bottled water.

The most effective intervention at the household level is basically a filter. Reverse osmosis (RO) systems remove the broadest range of particle sizes and do not require a plumbing installation.

On my tap I installed a PUREPLUS reverse osmosis filter a few months ago. It filters the microplastic in my water but keeps the minerals. 
It’s also convenient for me since I can even use the filtered water to wash my dishes, veggies, and even give my neighbour’s cat (that comes visiting us a lot and destroys our house) some clean filtered water as well.

Obviously there are many other solutions for dealing with microplastic in water and specially in tap water that I will cover in a different post that I promise you will be written soon!

Hot Drinks and microplastics

That One catches people off guard: hot drinks in disposable cups are not great to say the least. Standard paper takeaway cups have a plastic lining, and heat increases the rate at which plastics release particles and chemicals.

For this I feel like the simplest solution is bringing a reusable cup for Take Aways, or just drinking at the cafe and enjoy the coffee smell around when that option exists.

Canned Drinks and microplastics too?

I don’t want to take the pleasure out of life for you guys, but I have to say a word about those canned drinks. Those little bad boys have a lining inside the cans that contains BPA and other materials.

Here the solution I can offer is to just try to choose the glass-bottled beverages from the fridge. 

Kitchen Habits That Help Limit Microplastics in Your Food

The kitchen is where several small habits can compound into a meaningful difference. Here are the ones with the strongest evidence behind them.

Skip Heating Food in Plastic

This is the single most consistently supported action in the research, and honestly, one I never needed convincing on. For as long as I can remember, I refused to heat food in the microwave with the plastic lid still on. I had no idea why at the time, just some deep-rooted “plastic avoider” instinct kicking in years before I even knew what a microplastic was.

Turns out that instinct was onto something: heat makes plastic release chemicals like BPA into your food, and even containers that look perfectly intact do this, sometimes after just a few seconds in the microwave.Ever wonder why leftovers sometimes taste faintly of tupperware? Yeah. That’s exactly why.

Switch Your Food Storage Gradually

Here’s the part that surprised me (I guess my instincts are not as good as I thought they are a paragraph ago), but this isn’t only a heating problem. Plastic containers can leach chemicals and shed tiny particles even while just sitting in your fridge, doing nothing.

Especially food with fatty or acidic ingredients in it, or once the container gets old, scratched, or a bit cloudy from too many rounds in the dishwasher, it has a higher impact on your microplastics consumption. So skipping the microwave alone doesn’t actually let plastic off the hook.
You do not need to replace everything at once. Start with the containers you use most, or the ones holding food for days at a time, and work outward from there.

My personal favorites are glass containers with bamboo lids, they stack nicely and don’t hold onto smells the way plastic does. Or, if you want the laziest possible fix… just leave the food in the pot you cooked it in.

Reconsider Non-Stick Cookware

Speaking of pots, since apparently we’re just leaving food in them now, let’s talk about what they’re actually made of. Pots and pans with non-stick coatings, particularly worn or scratched ones, can release particles when heated. This was one of the first changes I made too, almost right after the water bottle: out went our old non-stick pans, in came a full set from a local stainless steel brand.

Cast iron, stainless steel, and ceramic cookware are the common alternatives. In Europe, these are widely available in large supermarkets and homeware stores. In the US, brands like Lodge (cast iron) and GreenPan (ceramic) are accessible mid-range options.

Buy in Glass or Metal When You Can

Once your own containers and cookware are sorted, the next question is what your food arrives in before it even reaches your kitchen.
Tomatoes, sauces, beans, and similar products packaged in glass jars or metal tins are generally preferable compared to their plastic-packaged equivalents. For canned foods, look for brands labeling their products as BPA-free, since many can linings historically contained this compound – yes, even the beans.

Plant Based Diet

Packaging aside, what’s actually on your plate matters too. Many synthetic chemicals, including those derived from plastics, accumulate in fatty tissue and in animal products.

Diets with more grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruit tend to involve lower overall chemical exposure than those heavy in red meat and processed foods. Nobody loves being told to eat more lentils, let’s not ignore here the gut activation it creates.

But overall the science lines up with pretty much every other health and environmental recommendation anyway, so at least the advice is consistent for once.

Choose Organic When You Can

Sourcing matters as much as what ends up on the plate. Certain pesticides can carry additional chemical exposures, and organic produce is less likely to have been treated with these.

Farmers markets are the obvious route but are not always available or affordable unfortunately.

How Your Personal Care Routine Connects to Microplastic Exposure

Bathrooms and personal care routines are another significant area – and one where the changes tend to be both noticeable and lasting once made.

Many personal care products contain micro-beads: intentional microplastic particles added for texture and exfoliation. These have been banned in the US and Europe for rinse-off products, but they remain in circulation in some regions and in certain leave-on products. Checking ingredient lists for things like polyethylene, polypropylene, or nylon is a reliable way to identify them.

Plastic packaging can leach into the products it contains, particularly with extended contact and heat exposure – conditions that are standard in bathrooms. Switching to products in non-plastic packaging removes this as a variable.

The most practical move here is actually switching to bar formats. Shampoo and conditioners bars eliminate the plastic bottle entirely and, once you get through the adjustment period (usually two to three weeks while hair recalibrates to the different formula), work well for most hair types. 

Another way is not washing your hair at all, but after a year and a half of it I even broke down 🙂

For your toothbrush: a standard plastic toothbrush spends several minutes in your mouth twice a day and gets replaced every few months.

Over a lifetime that adds up considerably. Bamboo alternatives are great eventhough the bristles are still an issue.

The Laundry Problem: How Washing Synthetic Clothes Releases Microplastics

This one tends to surprise people. Every time you wash something that is made from synthetic fabric like polyester, nylon, acrylic, spandex – it sheds tiny plastic fibers.

These microfibers travel down the drain, pass through most wastewater treatment systems (which were not designed to catch particles this small), and end up in waterways and ocean sediment.

A 2011 study published in Environmental Science & Technology found synthetic microfibers from clothing to be a dominant form of microplastic in coastal environments globally.

A single wash cycle can release hundreds of thousands of fibers. The number increases with water temperature, cycle length, age of the garment, and the agitation intensity of the machine.

There are a few practical responses, depending on how much you want to address it.

A microfiber laundry bag

The Guppyfriend is the best-known option – physically captures fibers during the wash. You put synthetic items inside it before running the cycle. Independent testing has found it captures a meaningful percentage of fibers that would otherwise escape. 

A washing machine filter

This one is a more complete solution. Devices from brands like PlanetCare and Filtrol attach to the machine’s drain hose and filter out particles before the water exits. The EU has proposed requiring these on all new washing machines. They involve a one-time installation and filter cartridge replacements over time.

On the clothing side

When buying new, choosing natural fibers could probably be the best option. Materials like cotton, linen, wool, hemp, viscose – is the most direct alternative.

This is actually the change I am in the middle of right now, slowly moving my closet over to natural fibers, one purchase at a time instead of a full overhaul. My partner is refusing to accept the fact that his wardrobe is next in line 🙂

It is the slowest of everything I have changed so far. Clothes last a long time, and replacing them before they wear out does not sit right with me, but it is the one getting most of my attention at the moment.

Not all clothing categories need synthetic fabrics, and the expansion of “technical” fabrics into everyday wear has made this problem more widespread than it needed to be. For sportswear and technical outdoor gear, the performance tradeoff is more legitimate, which is where the filter bag becomes especially useful.

Finally on this topic – wash synthetic items less often, at lower temperatures, and on shorter cycles. This reduces fiber shedding and it also extends the life of the item, which is its own form of waste reduction.

 

How to Avoid Microplastics in Laundry using a Laundry Machine

The Less Obvious Sources of Microplastics Worth Knowing About

Once water, kitchen habits, personal care, and laundry are covered, the biggest household contributors are largely addressed. A few additional sources are worth having on your radar.

Indoor dust

Household dust is a meaningful source of microplastic exposure that often gets overlooked. Synthetic carpets, upholstery, and plastic objects all shed particles that become airborne and settle as dust.

Vacuuming regularly with a HEPA filter prevents redistribution. This is a particularly relevant change if there are young children in the home who spend more time on the floor and are more likely to put hands in their  mouths.

Plastic-sealed tea bags

Some pyramid-style tea bags are made from nylon or PET mesh rather than paper. When steeped in near-boiling water, they can release billions of microplastic particles into the cup, according to a 2019 study published in Environmental Science & Technology.

Loose leaf tea in a stainless steel infuser, or confirmed paper-only tea bags, removes this entirely.

Receipts

Thermal paper receipts contain BPA and transfer it through skin contact. This is a minor but measurable exposure point. Opting for digital receipts when the option exists is a simple workaround. Washing hands after handling paper receipts is a reasonable backup.

Sea salt and honey

Both have been found to contain microplastic particles in peer-reviewed studies. The quantities are small enough that they are not a priority concern compared to the sources above, but they are an example of how broad the contamination is at this point.

Car tires

Tire wear particles are one of the largest sources of microplastic pollution in road environments globally, contributing to contamination of road runoff and urban waterways. This is not something you can address individually in a meaningful way, but it is relevant context for why complete avoidance is not realistic – and why the conversation around microplastics increasingly involves policy as much as personal behavior.

None of this needs to happen in one weekend. If you are wondering how to limit microplastics without turning it into a full-time project, start with the highest-frequency contact points: what you drink, how you heat and store food, and what leaves your washing machine. Everything else, the dust, the receipts, the tea bags, is worth knowing about, but it is not where the effort pays off first.

Start with one change and let it become normal before adding the next. Mine was a water bottle, yours might be a shampoo bar, a filter, or finally sorting through your closet.
